Make Printable Art Fun & Easy!

If you are new to printable art (also known as digital downloads),

It can seem very daunting, especially if you don't know where to start.

In actuality, printables are incredibly easy to work with, and super affordable!

You won't believe how addictive it will become once you see how easy it is to add fresh new art to your walls on a budget.

Feel like a pro - save money and time by reading through my guide here below!

• Printing At Home •

Printing At Home is a quick & easy option, especially if you aren't new to it. There are many great colour printers available that are easy to use - printing at home though does mean you are limited to size.

Most at-home printers can only print up to 8.5x11" (standard US Letter size). So if you are hoping to print a 16x20" print at home, that is not realistic unless you have a printer that has that capability, and you have art paper that size readily available.

But - it IS great if you are looking for quick updates at home. Most 16x20" or 11x14" frames have openings for 8x10" prints - which means as the seasons change, or as your kids grow, you can easily swap out art and replace it with new art you printed at home.

If you are new to printing at home, be sure to have researched your printer's colour printing guide online (Google your printer name + how to colour print).

I also recommend using inks that work with your printer, and fine matte art paper or cardstock. It may take you a few times to get it right, but once it is set, you are off!

computer & printer settings

In order to print effectively at home, you must ensure that your printer can print in colour, and that you have researched the best print settings for your printer. Your computer and printer settings must match exactly.

Please note that only smaller prints can generally be printed at home, as most can only print up to 8.5x11" (standard US Letter Size). Anything larger and you will require a specialty art printer.

Below are links for popular printers and their settings:

• Epson (Mac OS X & Windows)
• HP (Mac)
• HP (Windows)

For best results, print your artwork at 100% with no border. Deselect ‘Scale to fit’ as this will create a poor print with low quality.

If you are ok with printing smaller prints - read on!

Paper & Inks

Now that your computer and printer are set & synced, you also need to keep in mind the paper and ink settings. The quality of your paper & inks will equal the quality of your print.

For at home printing, I recommend a matte paper or cardstock. You can purchase these online (a quick Google search can help you!) or through Michaels Canada.

• Be sure your print settings on your computer match the type of paper you are using for optimal results!

• You can purchase ink online, but I highly recommend using ink that is compatible with your printer for the best results.

TIP: If you want to print an 8.5x11" print, be sure to have downloaded and selected the 8.5x11" file included in your order (all downloads come in over a dozen ready-to-print sizes!)

• Online print shops overview•

There are a multitude of online print shops available for digital download printing. Many of them also offer canvas prints, metal, or even wood.

I first would recommend shopping local - type in "giclee" or "archival printing" in your area and see what pops up! Most of these shops will have a multitude of papers to choose from, and should have a great explanation of each paper & their finish so you can make the best choice.

To start, download the file size you want to have printed to your computer via the download button to ensure the image remains high-res.

Once you have done this, simply go to your online shop of choice, select the finish you want, as well as the size, and upload!
